09. Sanctuary
Words by Jeremy N. Willet / Music by Willet

If who I am is where I’ve been
Then you’ve seen the world
But realize soon that you’ve been visiting
From the confines of this dirty hotel
To a bedroom, inside of a home

It only takes love, to build this sanctuary
It only takes love, I find this necessary
It only takes love, to build this sanctuary
I want to find love that is not temporary

So build a frame, add the porch, lock the windows,
Sweep the floor,
The house you created just locked love out the door
Does a war need weapons to cause a wound?
Because I can’t stop this bleeding in this house on my own

The bullets hit my skin, but are deflected by my heart
In order to survive, I’ve had to harden myself

EXPLANATION

When you strip the problems of AIDS/HIV from all the statistics, the political nightmares, and the failures, the solution boils down to one concept. Love. Seems a bit elementary, but in all honesty, it is true. If we truly care for the thousands of children that are dying on a daily basis, if we are concerned about how the products we buy are being made, and if we vote for political leaders based on their stance of extreme poverty, then we are showing love to the poorest of poor.

While touring the states, we often times found ourselves sleeping in dirty hotel rooms, on the floors of rock clubs, in the tour van, and various people’s homes. It occurred to me one night that if we are truly going to be a “sanctuary” of hope for the poor, then we must recognize what love looks like. Love goes beyond how we “feel” or our own comfort, even when it is inconvient.

Love is not where you have been or what you have accomplished, or where you live or what you have…love is what you do to those around you. We don’t need another church, another organization, another political leader, or another policy, we need real people in our communities to start showing love to others around the world. That is how true “sanctuaries” will be built. One child at a time.
